فقط یک دقیقه فکر کنید چه خواهد شد اگر زمانی که ظرف دو هفته آینده مسئله فلسطین در شورای امنیت مطرح می شود امریکا به آن رأی ممتنع بدهد. قطعنامه تصویب می شود. جهانیان حیرت زده خواهند شد. ایالات متحده وارد دوران جدیدی در روابط خود با کشورهای اسلامی خواهد شد. چشم اندازی را که شما در مصر برای آغاز روابطی دوستانه با جهان اسلام مطرح کرده بودید به گامی بس بلند در دوران ریاست جمهوری شما مبدل خواهد شد. ایالات متحده امریکا آن معنویتی را که همیشه مدعی مالکیت آن بوده باز خواهد یافت. آن انرژی و موج عظیم برآمده از بهار عرب بجای انحراف در جهت محکوم نمودن امریکا در راه مسائل داخلی کشورهای به پا خاسته مصرف خواهد شد. این تعارض بزرگی است که ما دائم خواستار عدالت برای مردم فلسطین باشیم، اما هیچ قدم معنی داری برای رسیدن به آن بر نداشته ایم. از سوی دیگر چنانچه ایالات متحده امریکا قطعنامه شناسائی کشور فلسطین را ویتو کند موقعیت ما نه تنها در جهان عرب بلکه در سراسر جهان برای سالیان درازی که معلوم نیست چقدر به طول انجامد لطمه شدیدی خواهد خورد. ما در جهان اسلام به یک هدف اصلی تلافی جویانه مبدل خواهیم گشت و باعث تجدید قوا در گروه های القاعده می شویم. من ده سال از تمامی ۳۶ سال خدمت خود را در امور خارجه ایلات متحده در کشورهای مسلمان به انجام وظیفه مشغول بوده ام. من به میزان عظمت نیروی خواسته عمومی دراین رابطه اطلاع کافی دارم. چرا ما باید اینچنین به انگیزه جدیدی بر علیه امریکا دامن بزنیم؟

آقای نتانیاهو اخیرا بیانیه ای صادر کرد بر این مبنا که "صلح تنها از طریق مذاکره مستقیم با اسرادیل میسر است" شما و من می دانیم که آقای نتنیاهو به هیچ وجه قصدی برای یک صلح عادلانه با فلسطین ندارد. تنها دغدغه او ادامه ساختن شهرک های اشغالی در خاک فلسطین است تا سلطه خود بر خاک فلسطین را به عنوان یک حقیقتی غیرقابل برگشت ثابت کند و مسئله فلسطین در اذهان عمومی به یک خاطره در گذشته های دور مبدل گردد. در سال ۱۹۴۸ کشور اسرائیل بدون هیچ مذاکره ای با فلشطینی ها استقلال خود را یک جانبه اعلام کرد. اگر اسرائیل واقعا خواهان مذاکره با فلسطین است چرا باید مذاکره با یک دولت فلسطین مستقل، بر اساس احترام متقابل او را از چنین مذاکره ای باز دارد؟

دولت پرزیدنت ریگان یک جریان تبلیغاتی وسیعی زیر عنوان " بگذارید لهستان لهستان باشد" به راه انداخته بود. اکنون زمان آن فرا رسیده که ما اجازه دهیم فلسطین فلسطین باشد.

Dear Mr. President:

Just think for a minute—what would happen if the United States abstained when the Palestinian question comes before the UN Security Council in the next week or two?

The resolution would pass. The world would be stunned. The United States would enter an entirely new era in our relations with the Muslim countries of the world. The vision you outlined in Cairo for better relations with the Islamic world would take the largest step forward of your presidency. The United States would once again have regained the high moral ground we so often claim to occupy. The energies loosed by the “Arab spring” would continue to be devoted to their own domestic affairs rather than being diverted into condemning the United States. We are hypocrites when we claim to want justice for the Palestinians but we do nothing meaningful to help achieve this.

On the other hand, if the United States vetoes the Palestinian request for statehood, we will damage our position in the Islamic world—not merely the Arab World—for untold years to come. We will become the object of retribution throughout the Muslim world, and will give new energy to the lagging efforts of al-Qaida to retaliate against us. I served my country ۳۶ years in the Foreign Service of the United States, ten assignments in ten Muslim countries. I know the power of this issue. Why would we want to give new impetus to anti-American sentiment throughout the Muslim world?

Mr. Netanyahu’s office has issued a statement saying “Peace will be achieved only through direct negotiations with Israel.” You know, and I know, that Mr. Netanyahu has no intention of concluding a just and fair peace with the Palestinian Authority. His only concern is to continue the inexorable construction of more settlements, creating more “facts on the ground” until the idea of an independent Palestinian state becomes a mere memory of a bygone era. When Israel declared its independence in ۱۹۴۸ it did not do so after direct negotiations with Palestine. If Israel really wants to negotiate with the Palestinians, why would negotiating with an independent Palestinian government, on an equal footing, deter it from engaging in these negotiations?

The Reagan administration launched an international information campaign under the slogan “Let Poland be Poland.” It’s time we let Palestine be Palestine.

Abstain from this upcoming vote. Just think about it.
